Born in Sarcelles, France, in 1979, Dominique Michalon first encountered music through gospel choirs that her parents introduced her to during childhood, both to nurture her abilities and to reinforce longstanding family principles. At age twelve the household relocated to Martinique, where she embraced a new direction after encountering the recordings of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. Captivated by jazz, she started appearing in the island’s shoreline lounges. Later she moved back to metropolitan France to finish secondary school in Paris, where she also accumulated stage experience through musical theater and opera productions. Equipped with this classical background, she settled for a time in New Orleans and adopted the performing name Beth Sheba. There she assembled her own ensemble and shared bills with gospel and soul figures Ray Charles and Manu Dibango. Momentum from these appearances led to an invitation to compete on Nouvelle Star, the French edition of the Idol series. Performing as Miss Dominique, she captivated francophone viewers and advanced to the finale, although victory eluded her—an outcome some attributed to Martinique’s ineligibility to participate in the voting. The exposure nevertheless secured a contract with Sony/BMG’s Vogue imprint, and her first album, Une Femme Battante, reached the French Top 20.
