Lorie, the French vocalist occasionally nicknamed the "French Britney Spears," ranked among the top-selling French pop performers of the early 2000s prior to the rise of television singing competitions modeled after American Idol. Laure Pester came into the world in 1982 within Le Plessis-Bouchard, located in Val-d'Oise. At the age of eighteen, she tried out for producer Axel Brangeon, who took her on as a client. After a demonstration recording was turned down by every major label, she placed the material online herself and registered fifteen thousand acquisitions over two months. Epic Records then offered a contract, resulting in the 2001 appearance of her first full-length project, Près de Toi.

This upbeat assembly of airy dance-pop numbers echoed the approach of other young female artists dominating global charts at the time, notably the referenced Spears, and achieved immediate commercial triumph, eventually reaching triple-platinum certification in France with sales exceeding one million units. The next release, Tendrement, followed in 2002 after rushed preparation, retained a similar character, and attained nearly equivalent success. Attitudes from 2004 introduced a somewhat harder-edged tone, while Rester la Même in 2005 incorporated zouk elements. She redirected her style toward greater sophistication on the 2007 album 2lor en Moi?, a work likened to Kylie Minogue's post-comeback output.

Four years devoted chiefly to acting, including a role as a Parisian model on the long-running U.S. soap opera The Young and the Restless, preceded the arrival of her sixth studio album, Regarde-moi, in 2011 and the Latin-influenced Danse the following year. Several live albums and a best-of compilation also appeared during her career. Although her professional path extended well beyond a decade, it was characterized by steadily declining sales as she was steadily eclipsed by the growing effect of TV talent shows.
