Among the many youthful vocalists catapulted into prominence by early-21st-century reality television stands Christophe Willem. Born August 3, 1983, in Enghien-les-Bains, France, he took piano lessons during childhood and performed with the gospel choir Young Voices. At age 14 he wrote his first original pop songs. In 2004 he appeared in the feature film Alive, yet his acting prospects quickly faded, prompting a string of temporary jobs while he completed a communications degree. Urged by relatives and friends, he tried out for the 2006 edition of the French amateur showcase Nouvelle Star, rapidly becoming a viewer favorite and receiving the nickname “La Tortue” (The Turtle) from judge Marianne James. Willem ultimately defeated rival Dominique Michalon to claim the Nouvelle Star title, then issued his debut solo single, “Sunny,” in July 2006, which reached the Top Five.

Inventaire, his first album, arrived in spring 2007 and entered the French charts at number one; an acoustic edition followed later that year. Caféine, his official second studio album, appeared in 2009 and featured a collaboration with Kylie Minogue, also debuting at the summit of the French album chart. Two years afterward came Prismophonic, an electropop set steeped in dance textures that climbed to number three. Paraît-il arrived in 2014, and Rio, Willem’s fifth proper studio release, reached number 12 in 2017, marking his fifth Top 20 album in France.
