Mollie King first rose to prominence as one-fifth of the electro-pop vocal group the Saturdays, an English singer and songwriter whose earlier auditions for The X Factor paved the way for her subsequent solo recordings. Born in London’s Wandsworth borough, she competed in alpine skiing during her youth and represented Great Britain before trying out for the U.K. version of The X Factor as a late teenager. After an unsuccessful first attempt, she returned in 2007 as a member of the all-female pop group Fallen Angelz, who were eliminated during the Series Four boot-camp stage. That exposure led to a successful audition for the Saturdays, and by mid-2008 she had joined bandmates Una Healy, Vanessa White, and former Top Ten-charting S Club Juniors members Frankie Sanford and Rochelle Wiseman on a tour supporting Girls Aloud while signing with Fascination Records, an imprint of Polydor. The group’s debut single, “If This Is Love,” which sampled Yazoo’s “Situation,” peaked at number eight in the U.K.; subsequent albums Chasing Lights (2008), Wordshaker (2009), Headlines! (2010), On Your Radar (2011), and Living for the Weekend (2013) all charted in the U.K. and Ireland, as did the 2014 compilation Finest Selection: The Greatest Hits, which contained three newly recorded tracks and also reached the Top Ten. In 2015 King announced her signing to Island Records, and her debut solo single, “Back to You,” followed in the summer of the next year.
