Mouthus, a Brooklyn duo, blends Brian Sullivan's effects-heavy guitar excursions with the free jazz stylings of drummer and percussionist Nate Nelson, deploying thick layers of instrumentation alongside squelching, overloaded noise that veers from dark and ambient textures to piercing and tortured peaks. A succession of CD-R and vinyl releases has allowed the pair to stand out in the East Coast's prominent noise and experimental hub, where they appear regularly at the No Fun festival and were tapped by Thurston Moore for the 2006 All Tomorrow's Parties festival in England. The project began in 2002, with Psych-O-Path issuing the limited self-titled debut later that year. In 2004 the duo delivered the LP Loam on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! imprint. During the productive 2005 campaign they issued the split LP 12-25-04 alongside San Francisco-based performer Axolotl on Olde English Spelling Bee, the limited CD-R/LP Bigger Throws on their own Our Mouth Records, and both the LP Slow Globes and a split tour LP with Double Leopards on Troubleman Unlimited. Activity continued unabated in 2006 with the split double LP Crippled Rosebud Binding featuring Double Leopards and Sunroof! on Music Fellowship, the CD For the Great Slave Lakes on Three Lobed Recordings, a limited self-titled LP on Olde English Spelling Bee, the LP Sister Vibration on Our Mouth Records, and the CD The Long Salt on Important Records. In 2007 Mouthus self-released the CD-R Dual Drift and tracked their first official studio album, Saw a Halo, which appeared on Load Records.
