Biography
Negrocan’s roster featured Andres Lafone, born 14 March 1954 in Montevideo, Uruguay and responsible for bass and vocals, alongside Liliana Chachian, born 18 April 1964 in São Paulo, Brazil and supplying vocals, Davide Giovaninni, born 19 May 1968 in Trieste, Italy and covering drums and vocals, Neil Angilly, born 28 April 1967 in Redruth, Cornwall, England and handling keyboards, plus Carlos Fuentes, born 13 December 1955 in Chile and contributing percussion. Lafone assembled the ensemble in London in 1991, fusing Uruguay’s ‘candombe’ rhythm with Brazilian, funk and jazz influences. The group found favor on the UK’s Latin and jazz dance scenes, issuing its debut album, Medio Mundo, through salsa DJ Gerry Lyseight’s Deep South imprint, and performed at festivals throughout Europe.
