Biography
Formed in 2010, the Melbourne, Australia post-punk outfit New War arose partly from the remnants of Shoplifting, the prior project of vocalist and songwriter Chris Pugmire. The guitar-free ensemble also featured ex-Shoplifting bassist Melissa Lock alongside drummer Steve Masterson and keyboardist Jesse Shepherd. Drawing from the dubbier edges of post-punk exemplified by the Pop Group, PiL, and Gang of Four, the group issued its 2011 debut via a 12" single spotlighting the mysterious and tense cut Ghostwalking, a track subsequently reworked by multiple artists including the Gossip. Their self-titled full-length arrived in 2012 and circulated primarily within Australia until receiving an international re-release the following year.
