Niccokick emerged in autumn 2001 when songwriter Andreas Söderlund assembled the guitar-driven Swedish indie pop group as an outlet for his own material, crafting a sound that blended the wry edge of the Shout Out Louds with the brazen style of Timo Raisanen. He completed the initial lineup by bringing in his brother Mathias Söderlund, Martin Stääv, and Philip Hall. Over the following twelve months the quartet tracked several demos, the earliest of which drew favorable notice from the Swedish indie press, notably Sonic magazine.

During 2003 the band issued its debut vinyl EP, Bye Bye! Friend, performed for the first time at Sweden’s Emmaboda Festival, and added Daniel Teodorsson to the roster; before the year closed they also put out their first CD EP, Turn 27. The title track’s rising popularity intensified attention around the group in 2004, prompting a packed calendar of live dates, an initial Swedish television appearance, and the mid-year release of their third EP, Run! Run! Run!. That autumn Razzia issued Niccokick’s first full-length album, Awake from the Dead, My Dear Best Friend.

The next three years were spent on the road and developing fresh songs, yet the members nearly disbanded in 2007 amid exhaustion. They persevered and delivered their second album, The Good Times We Shared, Were They So Bad?, on Razzia early in 2008.
