In 2000 the members of the bright-eyed Britpop combo Obi gathered inside a London studio to launch the project. A concentrated stretch of songwriting yielded a demo that quickly secured several live dates for the group. Although Obi had already existed in an earlier configuration, only the refreshed lineup and stronger material fully established the 2000 incarnation. Engineer Charlie Francis was brought in to cut a fresh demo, which landed on the desk of Cooking Vinyl Records before the year ended. The label promptly signed the band and invited Francis back to produce their debut full-length, The Magic Land of Radio (2002).
