From a young age, OMI displayed an easygoing charm as a performer, growing up as the son of musician Jah Ken. His talent caught the attention of Clifton "Specialist" Dillon, a key figure behind the rise of Shabba Ranks and Patra. The Jamaican artist gained worldwide recognition through the multi-platinum international hit "Cheerleader," featured on his first album, the 2015 release Me 4 U.

Born Omar Samuel Pasley in Clarendon, Jamaica, OMI made his initial mark in 2011 with the track "Standing on All Threes." He followed this in 2012 with "Cheerleader," a laid-back reggae-pop number he helped write and produce, which achieved notable success, especially earning platinum status in New Zealand. Subsequent releases such as "Take It Easy" and "Color of My Lips," the latter featuring Busy Signal, failed to match that impact.

A breezy dance remix of "Cheerleader" by Felix Jaehn topped charts across multiple countries in 2014, among them Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, and Switzerland, before reaching the U.S. Top Five in 2015. The next single, "Hula Hoop," climbed into the Top Ten in Australia and Sweden, paving the way for the October 2015 arrival of Me 4 U. OMI later appeared on tracks with the Vamps on "I Found a Girl," with Shaggy on "Seasons," and with Marcus & Martinus on "Never." He teamed up again with Felix Jaehn in 2018 for the single "Masterpiece."
