Greece's On Thorns I Lay originated in 1992 while still operating as Phlebotomy, issuing both a demo and a 7" EP under that earlier title before adopting their current name ahead of the 1995 debut full-length Sound of Beautiful Experience. Early efforts reflected strong influence from death/doom metal groups such as Paradise Lost and Anathema, yet the ensemble pursued a parallel stylistic arc across the subsequent albums Orama (1997), Crystal Tears (1999), and Future Narcotic (2000), gravitating toward a lighter strain of hard rock colored by introspective melancholy and atmospheric Gothic textures. Throughout those years, core members Chris Dragmestianos (guitar) and Stefanos Kintzoglou (bass) brought in a rotating cast of supporting musicians after relocating to Romania in 1995 for graduate studies, where they collaborated with Elena Doroftei (vocals/viola), Ioanna Doroftei (piano/keyboards), and Andrew Olaru (drums) before resettling in Athens in 2000. The arrival of new members Minas G. (guitars/vocals) and Fotis (drums), together with a partnership with Black Lotus Records, led to the 2001 release Angeldust and the 2003 follow-up Egocentric, both of which further developed the band's self-described "Pure Depressive Metal."
