Biography
Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day first encountered San Francisco's One Man Army at a club in the East Bay, which led to the group becoming the debut act on his Adeline Records label. Jack Dalrymple handled guitar and vocals, Brandon Pollack played drums, and James Kotter covered bass when the band formed, crafting a style that merged vintage and modern punk approaches while uniting forceful drive and intensity with melodic pop-punk hooks; Dalrymple's working-class themes run through their midtempo material. The trio's first full-length, Dead End Stories, appeared in 1998 with Kevin Army producing. After completing the Warped Tour, they followed with Last Word Spoken in 2000, again produced by Armstrong. BYO released the San Francisco group's third album, Rumors and Headlines, in 2002. Their live DVD Live at the Troubadour surfaced in April 2003 on Kung Fu, and a year later the band added a split entry to the BYO series alongside Alkaline Trio. Having played together since 1996, the members faced breakup speculation by 2003 and formally disbanded in 2005. Dalrymple later took up guitar duties with the Swingin' Utters and joined Pollack in Dead to Me.
