Biography
Opera IX came together in 1988 under guitarist Ossian, who cycled through numerous players before committing their first demo, Gothik, to tape in 1990. Momentum built only after female vocalist Cadaveria, bassist Vlad, and drummer Flegias joined the lineup, transforming the Italian heavy metal act—already counted among its country’s most distinctive and commercially viable 1990s ensembles—into a functioning creative unit.
The 1992 demo captured that progress, charting a course into ambient doom/death metal and quickly circulating as one of the underground metal circuit’s most prized tape-trading artifacts. Keyboardist Silent Bard’s arrival encouraged deeper incursions into classical motifs and gothic shading, elements that converged on the 1995 debut album The Call of the Wood.
Sacro Culto followed three years later on the Miscarriage label, pushing the band’s profile higher and earning recognition as one of 1998’s most distinguished avant-garde metal statements. Lunaris replaced the previous keyboardist, and the group produced a video for the single “Fronds of the Ancient Walnut.”
The Black Opera: Symphoniae Mysteriorum in Laudem Tenebrarum appeared in 2000, matching earlier accomplishments while expanding their verbose conceptual reach, yet any prospect of broader international recognition collapsed under internal friction. Cadaveria and Flegias exited to launch a new band under the singer’s own name, after which One Madras and drummer Taranis were brought in.
Maleventum, the fourth album, surfaced in 2002 and drew largely unfavorable reactions from fans and critics alike; subsequent rumors indicated that both recent recruits had already left the group, leaving Opera IX’s future in doubt.
