Pavo Pavo took shape in Brooklyn during 2015 as an expanded, reconfigured version of the short-lived indie group Plume Giant, channeling cosmic art rock built from rich vocal harmonies, wistful melodies, playful arrangements, and a broad production palette drawn from the post-Sgt. Pepper's era of the 1960s, 1970s, and later decades. The band issued its first full-length recording, Young Narrator in the Breakers, in 2016.

Its founding members began collaborating while attending Yale University. There, Oliver Hill, Eliza Bagg, and Nolan Green launched the whimsical chamber-folk project Plume Giant in 2010 and released the album Callithump two years later. In 2014 the trio supported Kishi Bashi on a national tour. The following year they announced that Bagg on vocals, synths, and strings, Hill on vocals, guitar, and keys, and Green on guitar and vocals had recruited drummer Austin Vaughn of Here We Go Magic and Happy Place along with bassist Ian Romer to create Pavo Pavo, taking the name from the southern constellation whose Latin meaning is “peacock.” Because all members were classically trained, they also performed with respected figures from both indie and classical spheres such as John Zorn, Roomful of Teeth, Here We Go Magic, and San Fermin.

Dan Molad of Lucius and Via Audio and Sam Cohen of Yellowbirds and Apollo Sunshine produced the debut album, which appeared on Bella Union in 2016 and drew comparisons to Grizzly Bear, Mercury Rev, and Fleet Foxes. Retaining co-vocalists Bagg and Hill at the center of a revised lineup, the group returned in early 2019 with Mystery Hour. By this point Hill had begun working as a producer, arranger, studio violinist, and touring musician alongside Kevin Morby and Vagabon, while Bagg supplied vocals for projects by Meredith Monk, Julianna Barwick, and Ben Frost. Mid-2019 saw the release of Angels on the Slope, the first album under her solo alias Lisel.
