Biography
While percussionists have frequently guided salsa and Latin jazz ensembles to prominence, the waning market of the mid- to late 1980s pushed most such leaders out of the spotlight. Pedro Conga, by contrast, reached his commercial peak precisely when many fellow salseros were withdrawing from the scene. His signature release, No Te Quites la Ropa, climbed to the number-two slot on Billboard’s Tropical Salsa charts in 1989, long after the U.S. salsa surge of the 1970s had ended.
Born in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Conga began his professional journey as a sideman for vocalist Justo Betancourt, touring with him across Latin America and Europe. Those connections opened doors to ensembles led by Tito Rojas, Anthony Cruz, and Maelo Ruiz. Equally gifted as an arranger and instrumentalist, Conga soon formed his own outfit.
Pedro Conga y Su Orquesta Internacional debuted on record with their self-titled album in 1972. More than seventeen subsequent releases and a career exceeding thirty-five years have established Conga as one of the rare bandleaders able to sustain success in salsa’s challenging terrain. Marking that thirty-five-year milestone, the group issued Con el Golpe de Siempre in 2007; the track “No Me La Pongas Dura” became a radio staple across the States and Puerto Rico.
