Peter Andre rose to unexpected prominence as a pop sensation in Australia during 1992 and 1993, a period when the nation showed scant appetite for an R&B performer who sang, danced, and flexed muscles onstage. He repeated this unlikely breakthrough across Europe in 1995.

Born in England, Andre saw his family relocate to Surfer’s Paradise, Queensland, once he turned ten. The move proved decisive for both his personal development and future career. Having only recently immersed himself in dance and soul music, he encountered little of it on Australian radio. Sharing these sounds with friends while performing them himself became his central focus, which soon extended to relentless phone calls to a national TV talent quest in which he sang directly to producers and pleaded for an audition slot. His determination succeeded when he delivered a live rendition of Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” earning an on-air recording contract from one of the judges, a record-company executive.

Breakthrough arrived in December 1992 with his second single, a straightforward cover of Brenton Wood’s mid-’60s track “Gimme Little Sign,” which became the year’s highest-selling release by an Australian artist. Further hits followed before he moved to London as a complete unknown. Persistent promotion and his signature bump-and-grind stage and video image slowly cultivated a following throughout England and Europe, leading “Flava,” his fourth international single, to debut at number one on the UK charts in September 1996. Additional successes accumulated rapidly, yielding three million units sold within six months. Andre’s recordings had always leaned derivative, his accomplishments resting chiefly on work ethic and personal drive rather than innovation. His 1998 album Time featured contributions from Montell Jordan and Brian McKnight.

After Time’s release, Andre stepped away from the industry until a 2004 appearance on the British series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!. While filming, he met former-glamour model Katie Price and began a widely publicized relationship. Capitalizing on the program’s popularity, his debut single “Mysterious Girl” was reissued and reached number one on the UK singles chart. The same year saw the release of the aptly titled album The Long Road Back. In 2006, A Whole New World, a duets collection recorded with his new wife Katie Price, entered the UK Top 20 despite widespread critical disapproval. The couple documented their life together on the reality series Katie & Peter, which ended in 2009 following their separation announcement; Andre issued his sixth studio album, Revelation, a week after the divorce was finalized.

At the start of 2010, Unconditional: Love Songs appeared, largely a compilation of earlier material that also contained five newly recorded tracks. His eighth studio album, Accelerate, followed later that year and included work with Guy Chambers, Labrinth, and Taio Cruz. Occupied with reality programs such as Peter Andre: Here 2 Help and Peter Andre: My Life throughout 2011, Andre returned to the studio in 2012. His ninth album, Angels & Demons, arrived in October 2012 and featured the track “Enemy,” which the late Robin Gibb had given him to record.
