Biography
Phonograph emerged from Brooklyn, New York, as a project fusing Americana textures with electronic elements. Their origins trace to Matthew Welsh, who supplies vocals, keyboard, and guitar, when he first teamed with Tony Maimone of Pere Ubu. Studio engineer John Davis, performing on bass and synthesizer, soon linked up with Welsh and promptly connected him to Dave Burnett on drums along with Abe Seiferth on guitar. Phil Sterk, adding pedal steel, keyboard, and guitars, rounded out the configuration in 2005. A random encounter with Wilco bassist John Stirratt resulted in Phonograph serving as support for the well-known country-rock group. Arclight Records issued the self-titled debut from Phonograph during February 2007.
