Biography
A trio of longtime friends from Los Angeles, Pinky Pinky blend indie pop, garage, and psych rock on their self-titled 2017 EP and the 2019 full-length Turkey Dinner.
The band members took up instruments early. Father-backed encouragement led drummer and vocalist Anastasia Sanchez to drums and guitar during childhood; bassist Eva Chambers started piano lessons at age six and joined a keyboard outfit with her sisters before her teens; guitarist Isabelle Fields abandoned violin lessons at age 12 to switch to guitar. Fields and Chambers first collaborated in middle school, and Sanchez completed the lineup after meeting Chambers in high school. Drawing on a broad palette of influences that included Fiona Apple, David Bowie, Yma Sumac, Frank Zappa, and Britney Spears, the three began composing original material.
Their debut performance took place at downtown L.A.’s MOCA Museum, after which the group maintained a steady schedule of shows and eventually signed with Hanni El Khatib’s Innovative Leisure imprint. The self-titled debut EP arrived on the label in April 2017, pairing garage rock with girl-group pop and prompting comparisons to the Growlers and the Shangri-Las. By the release of the more eclectic Hot Tears EP in 2018, all three members had completed high school. For their first album the trio enlisted El Khatib and co-producer Jonny Bell; Turkey Dinner appeared on Innovative Leisure in June 2019.
