Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, Popstrangers craft brash yet melodic sounds that evoke both the peak era of the local Flying Nun imprint and the influence of alt-rock icons such as the Pixies and Nirvana. The group came together in 2009 after singer/guitarist Joel Flyger, bassist Adam Page, and original drummer Elliott Rawson connected via shared acquaintances and discovered a common passion for acts like Sonic Youth and the Gordons. In September they issued a self-titled EP alongside a split 7" with Collapsing Cities, each showcasing the band's volatile blend of hooks and noise. The next year brought the Happy Accidents EP, which welcomed drummer Jimmy Mac and revealed a more muscular iteration of their approach. Nominated in 2011 for the Critics Choice Award at the NZ Music Awards—the honor ultimately awarded to Kimbra—the band continued forward. Early in 2013, now with drummer David Larson on board, the trio unveiled its debut full-length Antipodes via Carpark Records. After the members moved to London, the challenges of adjustment shaped the moody, psychedelic follow-up Fortuna, which surfaced in mid-2014.
