Pronto Mama originated in Glasgow, Scotland, as a six-piece alternative indie rock ensemble distinguished by jazz-infused compositions, irregular rhythmic patterns, and catchy pop hooks. The group came together in 2011, starting with Marc Rooney handling vocals and guitar, Ciaran McEneny on vocals, keys, and guitar, Michael Griffin on bass, and Martin Johnston on drums. These four members used bedroom jam sessions during their studies as an escape from routine existence in East-End Glasgow. Alex Sharples later joined on trumpet and keys while Craig McMahon added trombone, keys, and percussion, finalizing the roster and establishing Pronto Mama in its complete form. The musicians turned to crafting original material, drawing early notice when they issued the track "Arabesque" through SoundCloud in early 2017 on Electric Honey, the imprint run by Glasgow Kelvin College. Reviewers drew parallels to Bombay Bicycle Club and Dutch Uncles while praising the band’s novel approach to songwriting and arrangement. Exposure on Jim Gellalty’s Amazing Radio program and Vic Galloway’s BBC Introducing segment, together with additional nods to the Twilight Sad, Admiral Fallow, and Frightened Rabbit, prompted work on a debut full-length recording. Around the same period the musicians performed at Scottish festivals including Wickerman Festival, Belladrum Festival, and T in the Park. Their first album, Any Joy—whose name stems from a Glaswegian expression chosen for its simultaneous suggestions of melancholy and optimism—appeared in May 2017.
