Rádio Macau fused the singular timbre of vocalist Xana with unadorned rock & roll while layering in atmospheric alternative textures, establishing the group as one of Portugal’s top-selling acts throughout the 1980s and into the next decade. The band formed in 1983 when guitarist Flak, guitarist-vocalist Xana, and bassist Alex first convened; keyboard specialist Filipe Valentim and drummer Ramalho later rounded out the lineup. Their self-titled debut appeared in 1984, barely twelve months after the initial rehearsals, and immediate audience enthusiasm propelled the quintet to rapid national recognition. The follow-up, Spleen, arrived in 1986 and reaffirmed the same sonic identity, prompting the members’ earliest live appearances abroad, chiefly across Spain. Their decisive commercial ascent occurred in 1987 with the raw, unfiltered rock & roll statement O Elevador da Glória, which ascended to the summit of the Portuguese charts and remains the ensemble’s highest-selling release. Two years afterward, O Rapaz do Trapézio Voador demonstrated further conceptual reach by intertwining rock foundations with sleek, modernist pop hues. The collective then entered an extended hiatus that bordered on dissolution; during the interim Xana pursued initial solo endeavors while Flak contributed to various experimental Portuguese projects. Two additional albums surfaced nonetheless—Disco Pirata in 1991 and A Marca Amarela the following year. More than seven years elapsed before the musicians regained momentum, returning in 2000 with Onde o Tempo Faz a Curva. That record showcased their matured command of texture, centering lean pop melodies augmented by drum’n’bass rhythms and other forward-looking sonic elements.
