Biography
In the 1980s Portugal embraced Carlos Paião among its most beloved singer-songwriters. An early death kept him from what might have become his strongest creative period, yet he wrote more than five hundred songs across his career, many of them national successes. Born Carlos Manuel de Marques Paião in Coimbra in November 1957, he felt drawn to music even while older relatives questioned his abilities. After earning two prizes at the Festival da Canção de Ílhavo in 1978, his parents asked Valentim de Carvalho and Mário Martins for an expert assessment of his talent. Martins responded with such enthusiasm that he carried several recordings to Portuguese music legend Amália Rodrigues, and those introductions opened the door to Paião’s work as a songwriter. Herman Jose recorded Paião’s “Cação do Beijinho,” which earned the composer a Gold Record in 1981. The same year Paião entered the Festival RTP da Cançao; “Play-Back” took first place and advanced him to the Eurovision Song Contest, which he won. A run of strong singles soon positioned him as Portugal’s most promising new author. Other artists scored hits with his material, among them Cândida Branca Flôr with “Trocas e Baldrocas” and Amália Rodrigues with “O Senhor Extra-Terrestre.” Paião’s own releases “Marcha do Pião-das-Nicas” and “Telefonia” brought him recognition from both fellow performers and the Portuguese public. EMI released his debut solo album, Algarismos, that year. In 1983 Paião completed his medical degree while continuing to focus on music. His catalogue kept expanding with new successes for himself and others. A 1985 compilation, O Melhor de Carlos Paião, collected highlights from his output. In August 1988, shortly before the scheduled release of his third album Intervalo, Paião died in a car accident after a concert in Leiria. The nation mourned the loss of his talent and adopted the single “Quando as Nuvens Chorarem” as an expression of its grief. Numerous posthumous compilations followed, many of them warmly received by Portuguese listeners. Nearly a decade after his death, the 2007 collection Perfil reached number eleven on the sales charts.
