Portuguese pop star Marco Paulo entered the world as Simão João da Silva in Mourao. Already drawn to music by age six, he stepped onto stages by twelve. His financier father opposed these ambitions, forcing the boy to slip away from home for performances at local parties and gatherings. Although small payments arrived for his singing, Simão João also worked on farms and inside a pharmacy belonging to a friend’s father. Recognizing the need for formal instruction, he studied under Corina Freire, then among the country’s most respected vocal teachers. Her introductions secured him a spot on a regional Portuguese music broadcast; further appearances followed, along with an early recording contract. Three turns on the Festival RTP da Canção and a duet alongside Simone de Oliveira at the peak of her popularity established the artist, now performing as Marco Paulo, as a nationwide presence. The hit single “Eu Tenho Dois Amores,” shaped by longtime collaborator Mario Martins, confirmed his arrival. Over three decades with Martins at EMI, Paulo became Portugal’s most recognizable pop male vocalist. He later moved to the Zona Music label and teamed with producer Ramon Galarza in an effort to reach younger listeners. The 2007 album Marco Paulo reached the Portuguese Top 20. By his death on October 24, 2024, at age seventy-nine, he had issued more than seventy albums.
