Biography
Conductor and violinist Reinhard Goebel established himself early as a driving force in historically informed performance through his creation and leadership of Musica Antiqua Köln. His extensive and widely respected discography remains central to his legacy, and after the ensemble concluded its activities upon his withdrawal from violin playing, he devoted himself fully to orchestral direction while gaining recognition as a teacher.
Born on July 31, 1952, in Siegen in what was then West Germany, Goebel started violin instruction at twelve. He trained at the Cologne Conservatory under Franzjosef Maier, completed further violin studies with Saschko Gawriloff at the Folkwangschule in Essen, and pursued Baroque violin with Marie Leonhardt and Eduard Melkus. While enrolled in musicology courses in Cologne in 1973, he formed the period-instrument group Musica Antiqua Köln, initially comprising fellow university students drawn to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century repertoire. Serving as both violinist and director throughout the ensemble’s lifespan, Goebel steered its programs toward rarely heard figures such as Johann David Heinichen and Jan Dismas Zelenka alongside canonical composers including Bach and Telemann.
The ensemble’s debut release appeared in 1975 on an FSM Aulos disc issued with the Kölner Vocal-Consort and devoted to Alessandro Grandi. Beginning in 1977, Goebel and Musica Antiqua recorded solely for Archiv Produktion, launching the partnership with a collection of recorder concertos by Francesco Mancini, Domenico Natale Sarri, Francesco Barbella, and Robert Valentine. That association generated an extensive catalog honored by multiple Deutscher Schallplattenpreis awards, the Grand Prix International du Disque, the Prix Caecilia, two Gramophone Awards, and several Grammy nominations. In 2007 Goebel ceased violin performance because of chronic hand injuries, bringing Musica Antiqua to a close; its last recording, a 2005 album of Telemann flute quartets, had already appeared.
Thereafter Goebel concentrated on conducting both period and modern ensembles, appearing with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Dresden Staatskapelle, every German Radio orchestra, and the Academy of Ancient Music. He holds the post of principal guest conductor with the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie and, since 2018, has served as artistic director of the Berliner Barock Solisten, with whom he received an Opus Klassik award that same year for a recording of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. During the late 2010s and early 2020s he pursued an initiative he called “Beethoven’s World,” exploring lesser-known works by Beethoven and pieces by his contemporaries. The project yielded several 2020 releases, among them two albums with Mirijam Contzen featuring violin concertos by Franz Joseph Clement and music by Salieri, Hummel, and Vorisek, as well as a cantata collection by members of the Bach family recorded with Benjamin Appl.
Since 2010 Goebel has instructed students in historical performance practice at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.
