Biography
Hailing from Los Angeles, Robedoor operates as an exceptionally productive experimental noise rock outfit. Their output stretches across unsettling free-form electronic drones and thundering doom metal while incorporating touches of space/psychedelic rock and stoner metal. Britt Brown, co-founder of Not Not Fun and also active in Pocahaunted, Quintana Roo, and Topaz Rags, formed the group alongside the unrelated Alex Brown. Around the start of the 2010s, M. Geddes Gengras—who had played in Pocahaunted and the NNF-affiliated LA Vampires—joined as drummer.
Early recordings surfaced on several of Not Not Fun’s initial offerings along with limited CD-Rs and cassettes issued by noise imprints such as Troniks and Chondritic Sound. The project began as a harsh noise/drone act before doom metal and psychedelic elements gradually entered the mix. Subsequent appearances on Ruralfaune and Arbor, together with splits and joint efforts involving Leslie Keffer, Yellow Swans, Haunted Castle, and Pocahaunted, preceded the late-2007 release of the Rancor Keeper CD on Release the Bats. Interregnum followed with the 2008 CD Closer to the Cliff, while LPs emerged via Olde English Spelling Bee (Shapeshifter Slave), Woodsist (Endlessly Blazing), and Music Fellowship (Shrine to the Possessor). Raiders, issued in 2009, marked Robedoor’s first vinyl LP on Not Not Fun.
Once Gengras became a permanent member, the band delivered Burners on Important Records in 2010, the Pacific Drift EP on NNF, and a split 7" with Gnod also on that label. Too Down to Die appeared on NNF the following year, and Night People released the Rock Bottom cassette, later reissued on LP by Holidays Records. Gengras departed shortly afterward. Primal Sphere, the first Robedoor album for Hands in the Dark, arrived in 2013 and centered on distorted, hypnotic drum machines, thereby introducing a dark electro dimension. Following a four-year hiatus, New Age Sewage surfaced in 2017, again through Hands in the Dark.
