Roberta Miranda has long stood out as a prolific singer and songwriter devoted to the sertanejo, brega, and romantic repertoire. Before the 1990s those genres drew primarily upcountry and lower-income listeners, yet afterward they also conquered urban middle-class and affluent circles. Among her most recognized songs are “Sua Majestade, o Sabiá,” “Um Minuto a Mais,” “Meu Dengo,” “Chuva de Amor,” “Mistério,” “Dia D,” “Outra Vez,” “Sol da Minha Vida,” “São Tantas Coisas,” “Vá com Deus,” “Esperança,” “Rei dos Reis,” and “Eu Te Amo, Te Amo, Te Amo.”

She moved with her family to São Paulo at the age of eight. Determined to pursue a singing career, she overcame her parents’ traditional views by spending fourteen years performing in local bars. At sixteen she began receiving paid work as an opening act at Beco and Jogral, longstanding São Paulo strongholds of bossa nova, where she shared bills with Fafá de Belém, Rosemary, and other established artists.

After composing hundreds of songs and persisting through repeated rejections, she achieved her breakthrough in 1985 when Jair Rodrigues recorded “Sua Majestade, o Sabiá,” which approached one million copies sold. Her debut album under her own name appeared the following year and immediately succeeded with “Meu Dengo,” “Chuva de Amor,” and “São Tantas Coisas,” moving 800,000 units and earning both gold and platinum certifications. The second Roberta Miranda album yielded further hits—“Vá com Deus,” “Esperança,” and “Rei dos Reis”—again nearing one million in sales.

Now recognized nationwide both as performer and composer, she maintains a busy touring schedule with an eclectic set list that even incorporates forró, and she issued her fourteenth album in 2001.
