Runnner functions as the personal project identity for Los Angeles singer and songwriter Noah Weinman, whose earnest and atmospherically enveloping approach to indie rock has defined his output. His first appearance came in 2017 through the self-released Awash, after which he secured a deal with Run for Cover and reached a wider audience via Always Repeating in 2022 and Like Dying Stars, We're Reaching Out in 2023. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Weinman started with piano lessons and trumpet playing in his early years. His father instructed him on guitar and shared bands including Death Cab for Cutie and Fountains of Wayne. Following high school he pursued political science at Kenyon College while still holding a strong wish to make music. After earning his degree in 2016 he returned to Los Angeles, joined a band, and went on tour, though dissatisfaction with that group soon led him to record material alone. The band dissolved by 2017, at which point Weinman, now working as Runnner, issued Awash independently online. He next relocated to Rhode Island before returning once more to Los Angeles, where he settled into the local indie singer/songwriter community and put out several EPs. Those albums drew the notice of Boston-based Run for Cover, which offered him a contract. Always Repeating served as his first release for the label in 2022, followed by the arrival of Like Dying Stars, We're Reaching Out the next year.
