Biography
Sciflyer came into existence through the partnership of married couple Steve Kennedy, serving as guitarist and lead singer, alongside bassist Kim Oberly, following their extensive involvement in underground rock circles. Kennedy's initial foray into music occurred with the Houseplants, a college rock outfit from Delaware, where he encountered Oberly and wed her during 1994. Subsequent to the Houseplants' dissolution following the issue of a 7-inch single, Kennedy took on bass duties temporarily with High Karate in 1996. Relocating next to Washington, D.C., he established Red Circus Records in collaboration with Bill Holt, yet soon headed back to Delaware to start a new ensemble that began as Menthol before evolving into Nitrous, occasionally referred to as the Menthol-Nitrous Fiasco. In that ensemble, Oberly performed on bass, and upon its 1997 dissolution after completing just a single demo recording, the pair relocated to Alameda, CA. Following twelve months spent trying out for various groups, Kennedy and Oberly opted to assemble their band, bringing aboard drummer Laurens "Larry" Campos. Prior to this, Campos had performed in multiple lesser-known acts based in L.A. and had appeared as a youthful performer in the 1978 television film Devil Dog: Hound from Hell. Influenced by college rock from the 1980s and shoegazer acts of the 1990s, the trio put out their debut record, which was self-titled, during 2001.
