Biography
Sens Unik emerged as pioneers among Swiss rap acts to achieve widespread commercial recognition, forming a groundbreaking French-language ensemble from Switzerland whose commercial peak arrived in the first half of the 1990s. The collective originated in Lausanne in 1987 and centers on rapper Carlos, born Carlos Leal, vocalist Déborah, born Sophie Guérin, drummer Bio, born Laurent Biollay, and producer Just One, while earlier lineups featured Rade, Osez, and Dynamike. Their initial commercial release arrived via Maniak Records as the maxi-single Nouvelle Politique in 1991, quickly followed by the nine-track EP Le Vième Sens that same year, one of the earliest Swiss rap projects to reach a broad listenership. After switching to Unik Records, the group issued its first full-length effort, Les Portes du Temps, in 1992; the set introduced Déborah under her then-stage name Sista D and featured guest appearances from the French rap outfits Alliance Ethnik and IAM. Three singles emerged from the album—“A Gauche à Droite,” “Hijo de Latino,” and “Rira Bien Qui Rira le Dernier”—and a 1993 reissue propelled Les Portes du Temps to number 12 on the Swiss albums chart, marking the group’s commercial breakthrough. The follow-up, Chromatic, appeared in 1994 across France, Germany, and Switzerland, climbed into the Top Five, and yielded the Top 40 single “Laisse Toi Aller.” Tribulations followed in 1996, nearly matching that success by reaching the Top Ten and spawning the track “Paquito.” A retrospective collection, Panorama 1991-1997, surfaced the next year and included the fresh collaboration “Original” with German rappers Die Fantastischen Vier. Later projects Pole Position in 1998, Abracadabra in 2001, and Mea Culpa in 2004 reflected declining visibility as the group explored varied musical directions. The 2010 compilation The Generations marked the ensemble’s twentieth anniversary.
