Shana Falana weaves psychedelia, punk, and shoegaze into darkly kaleidoscopic tracks that shift between brooding and blissful moods. Emerging from the experimental pop circles of San Francisco during the 1990s and Brooklyn throughout the 2000s, she put out several solo EPs in the early 2010s before delivering her debut full-length, Set Your Lightning Fire Free, in 2015. Her third album, the druggier Darkest Light, appeared in 2019.

Born in the Bay Area, Falana grew up with a mother who composed original material and performed in cover bands, while her father favored jazz alongside new age and electronic artists; her mother also introduced her to folk-oriented icons. She began composing and tracking her own material in the 1990s, yet waited until after moving first to Brooklyn and then to Kingston, New York, to issue her initial official solo EPs, Channel and Velvet Pop, in 2011. In the Light arrived as a third EP the following year.

Once signed to Team Love Records, she released her first album, Set Your Lightning Fire Free, in 2015. At that point performing as a duo alongside partner and drummer Mike Amari, the pair embarked on an extensive U.S. tour. Falana again enlisted producer D. James Goodwin for Here Comes the Wave, issued in 2016.

After switching to Arrowhawk Records, she unveiled her third full-length, Darkest Light, in 2019. Marking her third consecutive project with both Goodwin and Amari, the record featured a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Stripped,” a song she had long performed live.
