Biography
Skye Townsend, a singer, songwriter, and actress based in Los Angeles, first drew attention as a teenager by posting inventive YouTube clips that ranged from original tracks and accompanying videos to comedic sketches and celebrity impressions. As the daughter of comedian and director Robert Townsend, she issued her debut EP, Vomit, in 2012 at the age of 18. The release blended R&B, pop, soul, Latin, and spoken-word elements in an accomplished package shaped by multiple producers and musicians, two of whose videos were helmed by her father. During the same period she joined the cast of the BET network’s 8 Days a Week web series and started work on her first feature film. Beyond performing, she also began appearing as a motivational speaker focused on helping young Black women sustain self-esteem amid societal pressures. Teaming with veteran producers Eric Hudson and Soundz, she issued her follow-up EP, Rocking Chairs, in early 2015.
