Biography
Producer and MC Sonny Digital contributed to Atlanta's grip on mainstream rap with a hard-edged style ideal for anthemic street tracks. His profile rose sharply in 2011 after crafting YC and Future's "Racks," which soon led to further successes with Future, 2 Chainz, and iLoveMakonnen. The producer reached a new commercial peak by helming Travis Scott's "Stargazing," a Top Ten pop entry, and later extended his chart presence through work with Don Toliver while steadily releasing his own material, including Black Goat 2 in 2020 and the EPs Vet and Back 2 Back in 2022. Dolores Son arrived in 2023.
Sonny Corey Uwaezuoke entered the world in Saginaw, Michigan, and began supplying beats to Atlanta rappers' mixtapes after learning production on his brother's MPC and via Fruity Loops on the family computer. His first official placement arrived in 2010 with Gorilla Zoe's "What's Goin' On," which secured national radio exposure, yet 2011 marked his true arrival via YC and Future's "Racks," a number six R&B/hip-hop single that climbed to number 42 on the pop chart. In 2012 he scored major cuts with Future's "Same Damn Time" and 2 Chainz's multi-platinum "Birthday Song." Two years afterward, Digital and Drake aided iLoveMakonnen's breakthrough on "Tuesday," a track that nearly topped the R&B/hip-hop chart and peaked at number 12 on the Hot 100. Over the ensuing period he stayed in high demand, contributing to projects by Chief Keef, Juicy J, and Meek Mill, while additional releases such as Rae Sremmurd's "Up Like Trump," Future's "Blow a Bag," 50 Cent's "I'm the Man," and 21 Savage's "Red Opps" earned gold and platinum certifications. He also advanced his own rapping career with the G.O.A.T. EP, followed in 2017 by the Black Goat tape.
Digital maintained a dual focus on solo output and outside productions. His most prominent placement to date came in 2018 with Travis Scott's number eight pop single "Stargazing," and within the next few years he placed Don Toliver on the Hot 100 with "Cardigan" and "After Party." His own catalog continued to grow through frequent singles, 2020's Black Goat 2 (with Black Boe), and the 2022 EPs Vet and Back 2 Back (the latter featuring CEO Trayle). The EP Could Be Worse and album Dolores Son both surfaced in 2023.
