In 1998, urban contemporary radio embraced the debut single "Be Careful" from R&B performer Sparkle. This track, achieving international success as a slow jam, drove her self-titled first album to gold certification. As a songwriter too, she contributed to much of her Motown-released 2000 album Told You So, though further solo releases waited until 2018, when a single paved the way for the 2022 Obstacle Course EP. Among the initial voices criticizing former producer R. Kelly, Sparkle also serves as a public speaker and supporter for those affected by sexual abuse.

Stephanie "Sparkle" Edwards, originating from Chicago, immersed herself in family gospel singing during her upbringing. Her R&B path began in 1994, providing backing vocals for Aaliyah's R. Kelly-produced Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, before securing a solo deal with Kelly's Rock Land label through Interscope. The impact of "Be Careful" arrived in April 1998, holding the top spot on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart for six weeks and reaching Top Ten in the U.K. and Netherlands pop charts. Reaching number three on the Billboard 200, the album Sparkle included the R&B/hip-hop single "Time to Move On" at number 41, plus a rendition of Minnie Riperton's "Lovin' You." A Wyclef Jean remix of that cover featured on the 1999 film Life's soundtrack.

Disagreements over creativity with R. Kelly, who handled production and most writing for the debut, prompted her shift to Motown from Rock Land/Interscope. Collaborating with Kedar Massenburg and Steve Huff, she delivered Told You So in 2000, an album with greater refinement that included co-written tracks like "It's a Fact," her third single to chart. It debuted at number 121 on the Billboard 200. Her initial album maintained sales momentum, attaining gold status by year's end.

In 2002, Sparkle jeopardized her professional standing and family ties by pinpointing her minor niece alongside R. Kelly on an explicit video submitted to the Chicago Sun-Times. Her eventual testimony against the producer occurred in court, and she participated in Surviving R. Kelly. With backing from the Braxton family, she moved to Las Vegas, spending years as a background vocalist for Toni Braxton. Solo endeavors restarted only in late 2018 via the independent release of the determined, uplifting ballad "We Are Ready." Through DNA Entertainment, "Easy" and "Open Letter" followed in 2020 and 2021, culminating in the 2022 EP Obstacle Course that added two fresh tracks to the prior singles.
