Stanford Prison Experiment came together in Los Angeles, California, USA, during the early 1990s, with Mike Starkey handling guitar and vocals, Mario Jiminez on vocals, Mark Fraser on bass, and Davey Latter behind the drums. Their fast ascent in the scene arose from an initial album that fused punk’s drive with rock riffs and arrangements, and the follow-up, The Gato Hunch, arrived under the guidance of producer Ted Nicely (Girls Against Boys, Fugazi) after six weeks of touring with close friends Quicksand, who joined them on a joint single issued in 1995. The band then shifted to Island Records in 1997, delivering their first release for the label the next year.
