Shift maintained only loose ties to the mid-'90s New York City hardcore scene, favoring reflective ballads over the usual spectacle of overturned microphone stands. Their music merged intricate rhythmic shifts and sudden bursts of intensity with unapologetic pop hooks, a blend that cultivated a devoted following in underground circles and eventually secured a major-label contract in 1997. Formed in their hometown of New York by vocalist and guitarist Joshua Loucka, bassist Brandon Simpson, and drummer Samantha Maloney, the band embraced an independent approach, performing at every opportunity while issuing the EP Pathos in 1994 and the album Spacesuit in 1995 on Equal Vision Records. Although Loucka’s even-toned delivery occasionally became monotonous, both recordings demonstrated command of rock’s dynamic range, most effectively on Spacesuit’s “Dress Up,” which transitions seamlessly between introspective verses and full-throttle passages. Amid fierce competition within their milieu, Shift distinguished themselves enough to attract Columbia Records in 1997. After guitarist Mark Holcomb joined, the quartet achieved greater sonic balance onstage, where the layered guitar textures of their earlier work had proved difficult to replicate, and they issued Get In that autumn before maintaining a rigorous touring schedule.
