Biography
Chaka Malik, who handled vocals, and guitarist Chris Traynor first crossed paths while performing in the New York hardcore outfit Burn, with their collaboration starting back in 1992. An initial incarnation of Orange 9mm saw the pair put out a live EP during 1993. That effort secured a deal for the group via East West, prompting the addition of bassist David Gentile alongside drummer Matthew Cross ahead of entering the studio. The resulting album Driver Not Included came out in 1994, after which the band embarked on tours supporting Helmet and eventually inked a pact with Atlantic in 1995. Later that same year, Gentile departed, making way for Taylor McLam to join once tracking wrapped on Tragic, an album produced by David Sardy of Barkmarket. The release of Tragic arrived in 1996, and Orange 9mm would wait until 1999 to deliver their next effort, titled Pretend I'm Human.
