A Tejano vocalist residing in San Antonio, Texas, Stefani Montiel maintains an extensive discography featuring multiple Sony Music projects from the mid- and late-1990s. She entered the world as Stefani Barela Sullivan in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and at the age of nine issued her debut full-length recording, the pop album Angel Baby, which received a reissue in 2008. Subsequently, Sony Music extended a major-label deal to her. Under the name Stefani at that time, she put out five albums via the company: Te Voy Enamorar in 1994, Todo Mi Amor in 1995, Porque Soy Mujer in 1997, Baila Conmigo in 1998, and Dulce Sensacion in 1999—the final one marking her initial output under the Montiel surname. Entering the new millennium, she inked a deal with the indie imprint World Records, beginning with Takin' on the World in 2004. Later came The Music of Joe Barela in 2008, comprising songs penned by her uncle of the same name. Divina, her third LP for World Records, arrived in 2009 and stood as her strongest effort in some time, yielding the tracks "Labios Venenosos" and "Sigo Enamorada" while securing a nomination for Best Tejano Album at the Grammy Awards.
