Biography
Steven Page possesses a warm tenor croon and works as a singer and songwriter, yet he remains most recognized for co-founding the Canadian pop and rock ensemble the Barenaked Ladies. Born in Ontario, he studied piano during childhood and performed in a youth choir. During his teenage years he began a songwriting collaboration with his schoolmate Ed Robertson, and that partnership ultimately produced the adult alternative outfit the Barenaked Ladies. Between 1992 and 2009 Page and Robertson divided lead vocal responsibilities in the group while Page wrote or co-wrote numerous tracks for the albums Gordon in 1992, Rock Spectacle in 1996, Stunt in 1998, Maroon in 2000, Everything to Everyone in 2003, and Barenaked Ladies Are Men in 2007. He also contributed to the band’s 2008 children’s pop release Snacktime!, although his widely reported arrest for cocaine possession that year prompted the Barenaked Ladies to cancel multiple tour engagements. After the charges were reduced to misdemeanors, Page declared his departure from the group in 2009. Once he had separated from the band he pursued several ventures, among them composing and performing the score for the stage work Bartholomew Fair: A Comedy in the New World, which opened at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival during the summer of 2009. Two albums followed in 2010: the covers collection A Singer Must Die and the original studio album Page One.
