Student Rick emerged from obscurity in Indiana when Victory Records discovered the group and presented its punk-pop sound laced with emo sensibilities to a wider audience. What began as performances in rural Midwestern communities quickly escalated to a showcase slot at the 2002 CMJ New Music Marathon. During the summer of that year the quartet—Adam Reiter on guitar and vocals, Brett Jones on guitar and vocals, Jason Pavilanas on bass, and Zach Davis on drums—tracked its first full-length effort in Fort Collins, Colorado, alongside producer Bill Stevenson, previously a member of the Descendents. Victory issued the resulting album, Soundtrack for a Generation, in October 2002, after which the band joined labelmates Catch 22, Grade, and Reach the Sky for the Victory Records Tour 2002. An outfit defined by relentless road work, Student Rick also shared national bills with Ann Beretta and appeared on the 2002 Vans Warped Tour.
