Biography
Forming during the mid-'90s at a school in Kensington, West London, Symposium featured Ross Cummins on vocals, Hagop Tchaparian and William McGonagle on guitar, Joe Birch on drums, and Wojtek Godzisz on bass. The London outfit surfaced at the close of the Britpop wave, occupying the uncertain stretch between the Blur-Oasis standoff and Radiohead's OK Computer while earning notice for ferocious stage shows and a cheeky punk-pop approach that steered clear of standard British conventions. Their debut album, On the Outside, nevertheless fell short of extending the momentum created by the single "The Answer to Why I Hate You" or the Melody Maker cover that had named them the Best Live Band in Britain.
