Biography
The Japanese ensemble Té—frequently rendered as Te'—forged an aggressive, forceful brand of instrumental post-rock laced with hardcore punk textures, aligning more closely with Mogwai than with Tortoise. Their concise tracks, built around gritty, overdriven guitar figures and intricate, shifting rhythms and meters, bypassed the gradual crescendos and quiet stretches typical of the style, plunging listeners instead into abrupt changes of intensity that occasionally yielded to calmer, more tranquil sections. The group attracted notice through a pair of deliberate quirks: assigning every release an absurdly extended, erudite title and issuing all CDs with identical artwork distinguished only by hue. Free of linguistic obstacles, they cultivated loyal followers both domestically and internationally, securing overseas distribution for their initial three albums. The significance of the band name remains undisclosed, although “té” denotes “tea” in multiple Romance languages while the Japanese term “te” signifies “hand.”
Té originated in Tokyo during January 2004. Early performances throughout the capital drew glowing notices from critics, and the ferocity of their concerts quickly attracted fervent followers who purchased every available copy of the band’s demo CD. They joined the modest independent imprint Zankyo, which issued their first single in September of the same year. Although post-rock already enjoyed considerable popularity within Japan, the single achieved a level of commercial success rare for the genre, prompting Tower Records in Tokyo to extend an atypical offer of promotional support. This step heightened the band’s profile, resulting in a consistent output of albums and singles that maintained strong sales over the following years.
During 2006 the group embarked on an extended promotional tour across the United States. Their debut album, Naraba, Imi Kara Kaiho Sareta Hibiki Wa "Oto" no Sekai no Shinen wo Kataru (“Thus, The Echoes Free of Interpretation Speak the Abyss of a 'Sonic' World”), appeared on CD in America via Status Quo Audio in a remastered edition augmented by two bonus tracks; the title was rendered in English as If That Is What Is Being Thought, Liberated Sound Talks the Depth of "Musical" World. In 2010 the German label Denovali—previously responsible for releases by fellow Japanese post-rock outfit Mouse on the Keys—reissued Té’s first three albums as an elaborate triple-vinyl box set. That same year the band’s growing stature at home led to a contract with the major imprint Tokuma Japan Communications for their fourth album.
