Sweden's Testbild has long cultivated an air of mystery around its activities, yet the band, project, or collaboration first reached listeners via a track on the Grace label's Amazing Grace Sampler during the 2000s. At its center stands Petter Herbertsson, based in Malmö, who later joined forces with Mattias Nihlen; both musicians handle numerous instruments and share vocal duties. Together they have produced an eclectic series of recordings that weave 1960s and indie pop elements through shifting contexts, ranging from passages of techno and glitch experimentation to threads of gentle folk, all marked by fragmentation and an enigmatic tone. Additional appearances on various compilations followed in 2001, paving the way for the project's debut album, The Double Life of Testbild, issued in 2002 by Radio Khartoum. The liner notes revealed a fascination with early computers such as ENIAC, while the songs themselves offered a warm yet occasionally dense collection. The self-titled EP appeared the next year on Rocket Science Society, and another compilation contribution came via Friendly Noise's Friendly People Making Noise. That connection evolved into a full partnership, yielding the 2004 follow-up The Inexplicable Feeling of September.
