Biography
Atlanta's husband-and-wife duo the APX first caught attention through their 2016 debut Electrik Funk, a project rooted in hooky throwback funk and electro-R&B. The group took shape that same year in Atlanta, emerging from the combined creative and romantic bond between singer Erika Dawn Rhodes and keyboardist Daniel "Dee" Rhodes. Before the APX existed, each had already established an independent path: Atlanta native Dee had immersed himself in jazz from an early age, while Detroit-born Erika had spent time on the road with rock and cover bands. Their initial connection occurred online in 2013, sparked by overlapping musical tastes, and led eventually to marriage. Settled in Atlanta, the pair launched a thriving wedding and events band, yet soon shifted focus toward more personal work by channeling their shared affinity for classic funk, pop, and R&B into original material. The APX released their debut album Electrik Funk in 2017, which drew notice through the single "Right on Time." In the years that followed, they supported live bills alongside Dam Funk, Kindred the Family Soul, Robert Glasper, and additional acts. Their second full-length effort, Amplified Experiment, appeared in 2019.
