Since forming in Pittsburgh during 1986, the Clarks have steadily delivered garage rock infused with country elements. Guitarist and vocalist Scott Blasey, guitarist Rob Hertweck, bassist Greg Joseph, and drummer David Minarik first earned notice through performances on college campuses, yet their direct rock approach also fit comfortably on commercial stations and in venues throughout the rust belt. Their opening record, I'll Tell You What Man, yielded the regional success “Help Me Out” and received notable airplay despite being self-produced. Follow-up efforts—The Clarks, Love Gone Sour Suspicion and Bad Debt (by which point Hertweck had adopted the name Robert James), and The Clarks Live—each doubled prior sales figures, expanding the group from a local Pittsburgh act into one enjoying broader regional draw alongside modest national visibility. That reach strengthened when the band signed with major label MCA for the 1997 release Someday Maybe, though the Clarks then stayed inactive for three years even while their earlier material reached stores nationwide via the King Mouse imprint. They resurfaced in 2000 with Let It Go, their initial Razor & Tie album. The label retained them, prompting a return to the studio the next year alongside producer Justin Niebank for Another Happy Ending, which appeared in summer 2002.
