Biography
The Cliks emerged from Toronto in 2007 with a sound defined by boldness, melody, theatricality, and shadow. Attention first arrived through their reworking of Justin Timberlake's hit "Cry Me a River," shaped by the White Stripes meets the Pretenders approach, while frontman Lucas Silveira, a transgender FTM, headed an androgynous, all-female group. Word spread throughout 2006 chiefly because of the band's intense club performances across Toronto, which drew Canadian journalists to draw parallels with Joan Jett, Jon Spencer, and Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie. Jake Gold, among Canada's most accomplished artist managers and a Canadian Idol panelist, soon began representing them; after personnel shifts, bassist Jordan B. Wright and drummer Morgan Doctor completed the trio. The group then landed on Tommy Boy, where sessions for their debut album began. Early 2007 brought endorsements from LGBT media, with both the Advocate and Logo featuring the act. Snakehouse reached stores in April, by which point the Cliks were already crossing the United States on tour and reaching listeners well beyond the LGBT audience.
