Biography
Originating from a line of dialogue in the fantasy movie Willow—where "daikinis" denoted people of exceptional height—the Scottish band the Dykeenies formed in Cumbernauld, a community close to Glasgow. In summer 2005, vocalist and keyboardist Brian Henderson teamed with his sibling, lead guitarist Alan Henderson, to launch the project. Their material blended pop, rock, and electronic elements in an artful yet spirited style. The Henderson brothers then brought in another sibling, Andrew Henderson, on bass, while longtime acquaintances Steven Ramsay on guitar and John Kerr on drums completed the lineup. After gaining experience through local shows in Glasgow, the group earned an early opportunity by winning the Your Sound contest at the city's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut venue. In July 2006 they issued a single on the newly established King Tut's Recordings imprint, created by the club's operators to promote emerging talent. Lavolta Records later signed the band, whose initial output for the label—a four-song EP—coincided with their slot on the NME Rock 'n' Roll Riot tour alongside the Horrors, the Fratellis, and the Maccabees. Following numerous performances across Scotland and the rest of Britain, the Dykeenies released the New Ideas single in April 2007, marking their debut appearance on the British charts. The Stitches single reached stores on September 10, 2007, and their debut album, Nothing Means Everything, arrived one week afterward.
