Biography
Seattle outfit Sunny Day Real Estate reached its conclusive dissolution in 2001 under rather unremarkable circumstances, given the group's history of at least three prior breakups and reunions amid a volatile but impactful career. Departures stemmed from spiritual pursuits as well as performances alongside the Foo Fighters. Three-quarters of the lineup reconvened in 2003 under the Fire Theft moniker, with Jeremy Enigk handling vocals and guitar, William Goldsmith on drums, and Nate Mendel on bass. They built their new project on material that lyrically referenced shared history while pursuing fresh sonic territory to move beyond old conflicts. Their inaugural album appeared via Rykodisc in September 2003, incorporating expansive instrumental passages alongside rock foundations infused with indie stylings and highlighted by Enigk's engaging vocals. That autumn, the group hit the road for club dates supporting Laguardia.
