Biography
Renowned for his honeyed voice and songs exploring both love and pressing social issues, Mighty Sparrow—originally named Slinger Francisco—ascended to the pinnacle of Trinidadian calypso. His signature successes include the 1956 release “Jean and Dinah” and the 1957 track “Carnival Boycott,” and he ultimately claimed the calypso crown eleven times while securing eight victories in Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival Road March contest. Raised in modest circumstances in the tiny fishing settlement of Gran Roi, Grenada, he relocated to Trinidad at the age of one. There he honed his singing in the children’s choir at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, eventually serving as its lead chorister. By fourteen he had assembled a steel band for Carnival performances, an experience that ignited his passion for calypso. He later mastered the guitar on his own and started composing original material. His triumph in the Carnival competition with “Jean and Dinah” earned him a forty-dollar prize. Outraged by the payout, he penned the fiery protest song “Carnival Boycott,” which lambasted the local music business. Although he boycotted the contests for the following three years, he emerged as one of the most celebrated performers across the Caribbean.
