In the early 2000s, multi-instrumentalists Sean Williams, Stephen Jerkins, and Brian Fuzzell assembled the Nashville, TN-based indie rock group the Nobility, known for its affable style. Initially performing as Jetpack UK, the trio faced legal threats in early 2007 from another band with an almost identical title and therefore selected a fresh name. Despite the forced rebranding, Williams, Jerkins, and Fuzzell pressed forward and issued their first full-length album, The Mezzanine, later that same summer. The record included a guest appearance from seasoned saxophonist Jim Hoke and centered on swinging, brassy, melodic indie rock that echoed Elvis Costello’s songwriting approach while reflecting the eclectic pop leanings of contemporaries such as Tally Hall, Wolf Parade, and the Hard Lessons.
