A thorough search for musical talent among personnel across the United Kingdom’s Armed Forces identified the five-member Poppy Girls—Charlotte Mellor, Bethany Davey, Alice Milburn, Megan Adams, and Florence Ransom. Their initial breakthrough came in 2013 when the group auditioned successfully for the chance to appear before the Queen at the Festival of Remembrance. Television spots and prominent live engagements soon followed, leading directly to a recording contract. Each singer had a father serving in the Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force, and the ensemble underwent an intense six-month surge of activity after the royal performance. Their debut single, “The Call (No Need to Say Goodbye),” spread rapidly online, accumulating more than 200,000 YouTube views, and entered the Top Ten of the U.K. singles chart in November 2013.
